Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to suggest educational content for companion dogs¡¯ oral hygiene management and evaluate the recognition, knowledge, and behavior of dog owners regarding oral care education.

Methods: The survey used Google¡¯s online system and was issued to 51 participants aged 18 years and above. The survey had five, two, and twelve items on general characteristics, information about the dog, and dog¡¯s oral care-related values, respectively. Recognition was scored between 1 (lowest) and 5 (highest). In addition, a quiz was performed to compare knowledge levels before and after oral care education using video content. Frequency analysis, multiple response analysis, and the paired t-test were performed on the data using SPSS version 26.0.

Results: There was a significant increase (0.57) in owners¡¯ recognition after oral care education (p<0.001). Additionally, the average evaluation score for assessing the knowledge level of dog owners¡¯ oral hygiene management increased from 68.9 to 73.8 (p<0.001). Finally, it was confirmed that the frequency of tooth brushing was either improved or maintained in 33 subjects (97.1%).

Conclusions: To manage the oral health of dogs, appropriate oral care education and guidelines should be provided to dog owners, which will improve the oral health of dogs.
